Best Gun Safes

If you’re a lover of the second amendment and choose to exercise your right to bear arms, it’s a good idea to make sure you’re doing so safely and responsibly.

Although the USA currently homes over 393 million civilian-owned firearms, only around 46% of these are reported as being ‘safely’ stored. A gun safe is a great way to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

They’re particularly important if you have children in the home, as their curious hands could stumble upon your firearm in a matter of minutes and cause injury to themselves or others.

You may be opposed to owning a gun safe as you feel it could slow you down in an emergency, but this is not the case.

Many modern gun safes come with fingerprint technology or smart locking systems that allow you to gain access in less than a second.

To help you out, we’ve compiled a list of gun safes of the highest caliber and compared their key features as well as their pros and cons.

In a hurry?

We understand that searching the Internet to find the perfect firearms safe can be a long and tiresome pursuit.

So to assist you, below is a quick link to our favorite gun safe on the market right now. We’ve even included a small rundown of its key features.

  • Capacity: 2 handguns or 1 large pistol

OUR TOP PICK

Our favorite gun safe on the market at the moment is this small but stylish gun safe made by Awesafe. This safe stands out due to its fingerprint scanning system.

At the front of the safe is a tiny glass square, this is where you place your fingerprint and if you’re the owner of the safe, it’ll open within 1 second, making it an ideal choice for those of you interested in buying a quick-access safe.

Another great feature of this safe is that if it malfunctions or the batteries die, there is a back-up combination option. This makes this safe ideal for those with children, as there is no way any small curious hands can get inside.

We also love the fact that this safe is fitted with an internal light that shines when opened. It’s bright enough to see your firearms and belongings without an additional light source.

As well as being practical, this safe is repeatedly praised by Amazon reviewers for its heavy-duty quality. This safe is constructed with solid steel and has a pry-resistant door, making it difficult for thieves to access your items, even if they use hand tools.

Although it looks compact, this safe is big enough to store two standard handguns or one large pistol and even some extra ammunition.

A great feature of this safe is that it comes with screws just in case you choose to mount it or fix it permanently inside a drawer, making it near impossible for thieves to pick up your safe and walk away.

Pros

  • Fingerprint recognition allows for quick access
  • It can hold a couple of handguns or one large pistol
  • You can set your own password for backup access to your guns
  • Solid steel construction with an enforced pry-resistant door
  • Comes with the option to mount it in place for added security
  • It’s fairly cheap for a safe with a fingerprint lock mechanism

Cons

  • Some reviewers have mentioned that there is a small gap near the door of the safe that allows outsiders to see what’s inside, however, this may have just been a defect in a certain batch.

EDITORS CHOICE

Although this safe isn’t specifically advertised as a safe for firearms, we think it’s perfect for the job.

In fact, plenty of reviewers on Amazon have found this to be a great safe for storing firearms and it’s able to fit multiple small guns and even ammo cans. The safe itself looks sleek and stylish due to its all-black appearance, inside and out.

Inside the safe there is a central metal shelf, this is ideal for separating firearms and ammo from important documents, jewelry, and other valuables. This safe is locked using a programmable electronic keypad to ensure easy and quick access.

However, there’s a backup key included for emergencies, so be sure to hide/store this key responsibly.

This safe is durably built from heavy-duty carbon steel and consists of an 8-gauge steel door and a 14-gauge steel body, making it virtually impossible to break into.

Additionally, the safe’s two live-door bolts and pry-resistant concealed hinges offer superior security and reliable strength, helping to prevent intruders from getting inside the safe.

We also love that this AmazonBasics safe comes complete with pre-drilled mounting holes which make it easy to securely mount the safe to the floor or wall.

Mounting the home safe adds an extra layer of deterrence, and all necessary mounting hardware comes included.

We consider this safe to be a great budget-friendly option for its size and it’s made by Amazon, so you should be in good hands.

Pros

  • Roomy dimensions of 13.8 x 13 x 16.5 inches make it easy to store multiple firearms as well as ammunition and other valuables
  • Made from a heavy-duty carbon-steel construction
  • Programmable electric keypad with back-up key for emergency use included
  • Pre-drilled mounting holes and hardware included

Cons

  • This safe doesn’t protect from fire and water damage

BEST VALUE

Unlike our previous two options in this list, the Barska Quick and Easy Access Biometric Fingerprint Rifle Safe is a tall safe. This means that as well as being suitable for storing handguns and pistols, it can help to keep rifles safe too.

Its dimensions are 8.63" x 9.75" x 52.13", making it roomy enough for all of your belongings. However, you must be sure you have enough space to keep a tall gun safe before investing in one.

It comes in a variety of models, but even the smallest option can hold up to 4 large firearms at one time with an added shelf for ammunition or valuables.

This safe is made with 100% solid steel walls and tamper-resistant inner edges. It even comes with 3 built-in steel deadbolts which create a 3-point locking system that can resist prying, locks out thieves, and keeps your firearms out of reach of children.

This safe features a biometric fingerprint system, much like our top pick. However, this safe can store up to 120 different fingerprints.

Its state of the art fingerprint system will recognize your print even at an awkward angle or if it only touches the scanner for less than a second. This makes it ideal in dangerous situations where you may be panicking or if you’re in a hurry.

Pros

  • Dimensions of 8.63" x 9.75" x 52.13" make it super easy to store multiple large firearms at once
  • Biometric fingerprint unlocking system can store up to 120 different fingerprints and will recognize them even when at an angle
  • Made from 100% solid steel with an anti-prying door keeps thieves out
  • It’s an affordable option for such a large gun safe

Cons

  • Due to its size, you’d need to have a large space to store it. Preferably out of sight too, which isn’t an option for everyone.

RUNNER UP

Next up on our list is this super-compact Travel Case made by Vaultek. We love it due to its small size and portability.

Unlike other options on this list, the Vaultek safe can be easily taken along on road trips, kept in a car glove box, or kept in your backpack.

Although it is portable, this means that it is very small. If you only keep one handgun, this may be ideal for you. It’s even waterproof, dustproof, airtight and it floats!

It’s powered by a 9V alkaline battery which can last up to a year with normal usage. However, this battery isn’t included with the product so you’ll have to acquire your own.

This safe features a built-in locking system that is activated using a touch keypad. It is unlocked using a 4 number pin and locked again by simply pressing the padlock button.

Backup emergency keys are also included, but be sure to store them responsibly. It can even be used without the battery and simply used as a handy waterproof case.

Pros

  • Super lightweight and portable weighing only 2lbs, making it completely portable
  • It’s very compact but able to fit a handgun up to 7.75" in overall length, 6.5" in overall width, and 1.75" tall
  • This safe is waterproof, dustproof, airtight, and it floats on water.
  • Great budget-friendly option if you can’t splash out on a large safe

Cons

  • Due to its size, it isn’t going to protect your firearm as well as bigger safes. With the right tools and enough time, thieves could probably gain access to your valuables.

RUNNER UP

Our final addition to this list is this Under-Bed Safe made by Moutec. Being the only safe of its kind on this list, we like it due to its thin shape yet large capacity.

It is a flat and long safe that includes a large slide-out drawer. This drawer can accommodate firearms, jewelry, documents, and more.

It isn’t limited to the under-bed space and can be used under other types of large furniture such as in a closet or in a vehicle out of sight. This safe is fitted with mounting holes so that you can fix it to the floor, adding a further level of protection.

This Moutec safe is unlocked using a digital PIN code, which you’ll have to keep secret. It does also come with a backup key in case of emergencies, but this should be stored responsibly too.

After you’ve entered your PIN code, an internal light will shine for 20 seconds after opening, this is ideal for dangerous situations or times where you may be in a hurry to access your firearms at night.

This safe can hold long rifles as well as multiple smaller handguns and pistols. However, we recommend measuring your guns before purchasing and also ensuring that you have enough clearance space to open the drawer.

Pros

  • The slimline design makes it perfect for storing under the bed out of sight, making it less likely to be spotted by intruders and children
  • It’s capable of holding an array of large rifles as well as smaller handguns and pistols
  • Uses a PIN code system which activates an internal light for quicker access to your firearms

Cons

  • This safe is not fire-safe or water-resistant

Best Gun Safes Buying Guide

Whether you’re still unsure if you’re going to take the plunge and buy a gun safe or if you’re certain you need one and you’re sticking to your guns, be sure to check out this Buyer’s Guide to help you with your purchase.

Below is a list of key features that you should look into before making a decision.

Size

The size of your safe is something to look into after you’ve decided where you want to store it. We recommend measuring the space you’re going to keep your safe and then begin looking to buy.

If you can spare the room, we recommend opting for a sizeable safe. As this purchase should be seen as an investment, you’ll need to think about things you’ll need to store in the safe in the future.

For example, you may want enough room to hold any future firearm purchases and to hold other valuable belongings, jewelry, and documents.

Steel Gauging

The whole purpose of owning a safe is to prevent outsiders from having access to your belongings without permission, this includes thieves.

To ensure thieves can’t break into your safe when you’re not around, it’s important to opt for a safe with a higher steel gauge to make it more impenetrable.

Steel comes in a variety of different gauges, but for gun safes we recommend purchasing an 8 or higher as this means it won’t be able to be drilled or pried open, keeping your belongings safe.

Door Thickness

The thickness of the access door to your safe will directly impact how resilient it is. Having a thicker door can prevent burglars from being able to pry, blast, or drill through it.

We recommend opting for one with a door measuring 5/16” and up to ensure maximum safety and fire protection.

The Bolts

The bolts of a safe are important as they are what keep safe from opening.

When in use, they slide to lock the door in place. Thick bolts are more durable, but you also want multiple bolts.

Some safes only have two while others may be designed with up to 10 steel bolts. In this case, the more bolts, the merrier.

Locking Mechanism

If you’re particularly worried about intruders, you’re probably going to want a safe that allows for quick access to your firearms.

There are a variety of different locking mechanisms to choose from, but for quick access, we recommend staying away from key locks and even number combination locks.

Instead, look into safes with fingerprint scanning, Bluetooth smartphone entry, or RFID systems.

Mounting and Anchors

As well as locking your safe, you need to ensure that your safe isn’t easily portable or thieves can simply walk off with it.

If thieves get the opportunity to take the safe to another location, they may have means of getting into it.

To prevent this, we recommend choosing a safe that comes with mounts and anchors.

Alarms

Some intelligent safes come equipped with an alarm system that blares if the wrong combination pin is entered too many times and some even detect movement and will sound if it is picked up.

Alarms are great anti-theft devices that will scare off any potential thieves.

Maximum Protection

This is what it all comes down to. You want a safe that provides maximum protection for you and yours.

That means steel that can’t be drilled into, a lock that can’t be pried open, a combination that’s not easily cracked, and a safe that can’t just be stolen.

When it comes to the items inside, you should consider a safe that’s fire and waterproof so that maximum protection can carry over to your firearms and valuables. Safes that are BF rated are near impossible to crack into if not given immediate access.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should my safe have mechanical or electronic locks?

Both mechanical and electrical safes have their different advantages and disadvantages but it’s just a matter of deciding which disadvantages you’re prepared to deal with and what advantages are important to you. All electronic safes require batteries.

At some point, those batteries will die, leaving you with two options: either having spares on hand to replace them or utilizing the less-convenient backup method of unlocking the safe.

However, electronic safes are super quick to open as they often have fingerprint scanners, making them perfect for people looking for quick-access safes.

If you opt for a mechanical lock, you will have to use a key each and every time which can become a nuisance. However, with a mechanical lock, there’s no chance of the batteries dying at a critical moment.

How effective are combination safes?

There are a few concerns people may have when considering a combination safe. However, if used correctly, they can be a great, safe way of storing your firearms but it is up to you to ensure that they are kept safe.

For example, When you set a combination, never write it on a piece of paper as there’s a good chance you’ll lose it.

Also, if anyone happens to find it and figures out what its purpose, your firearms are no longer safe. We recommend taking extra cautionary measures with children, who are curious about everything in the home. This also means that when you input a combination, make sure nobody is around at the time.

Number series aren’t difficult to remember, especially shorter codes. Trust your code with two people only, yourself and your spouse/partner or someone very close to you that you trust. You should both agree to never share it with anyone else.

If you do fear you’ll forget the code over periods of not using it, store it somewhere that can be locked up, such as your phone. Don’t label it “Gun Safe,” however, on the off chance someone cracks your phone’s password.

Am I legally required to own a gun safe?

There are currently only 4 states in the USA where you must store away your firearms after use. Of those four, only one state, Massachusetts, has laws in place that require firearms to be locked up when not in use or in the owner’s possession/control regardless of the city.

In states such as California, Connecticut, and New York,  you will be required to own locked firearm storage, but only in certain cities. For instance, Californian cities like San Francisco and Sunnyvale, and Albany, NY require all guns to be stored in a lock depository when not in use or possession/control of the owner.

Though your state may be one of the 46 states without laws in place, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t own a gun safe. You may not be legally bound to store your gun, but it’s still a sound investment that will keep you, your family, and your firearms safe from the unexpected.
